The PNP consists of partnerships between the Government of Canada and provincial governments to select individuals who wish to immigrate to Canada. The Family Class Sponsorship program allows Canadian citizens or permanent residents to sponsor close family members to Canada. To do this such inviting family member must at least be 18 years of age . This is because such sponsor must sign a contract promising to support the family member who wishes to immigrate for a period of three to ten years after their arrival. to this end also, the sponsored relative must also sign a contract promising to make every efforts to be self-sufficient.
As a mater of fact, for these to be effective, the Canadian citizen or permanent resident must demonstrate the financial ability to provide for the essential needs of the sponsored relative. As a general rule, the sponsor must also be physically residing in Canada to be able to sponsor.
Family members eligible for sponsorship are:
- Spouses or common-law partners.
- Parents or grandparents.
- Dependent children
- Children under 18 whom you plan to adopt Orphaned brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews. These must be those under 18 and unmarried.
- A relative of any age – in the absence of any of the family members listed above.

The Business Immigration Program is designed to seek out individuals who are buoyant economically. These are those who are in a position to contribute to Canada’s economic development through their investment and managerial skills. Therefore. Individuals with financial resources, business experience and relatively high net worth may apply under one of three categories of the Business Immigration Program. Each of these categories has different targets with different requirements.
Immigrant Investor Program:
This program seeks to attract experienced business people. They must be those willing to make substantial investments in the Canadian economy. Applicants for this must show a net worth of at least CAD$800,000. Such must also prove that his wealth was legally obtained. In addition, Immigrant Investors must make an investment of CAD$400,000 through the government. And, this must be returned by the government of Canada at the end of five years, with no interest. For this also to be approved, the Immigrant Investor must prove that he has managed a qualifying business. In addition, applicants destined to the province of Quebec will be assessed under Quebec similar Investor Program.
Entrepreneur Program:
The Entrepreneur Program is geared towards business immigrants who plan to play economic roles in Canada. The net worth requirements for the Entrepreneur Program is CAD$300,000 which is lower than the CAD$800,000 for investor program. Applicants under this Program must commit to both managing and owning at least one-third of a Canadian business. This is to create or maintain employment within three years of landing in Canada.
However, applicants destined to the province of Quebec will require conditions similar to Entrepreneur Program administered by that province.
Self-Employed Persons Program:
This program is for those with relevant experience and skills in business, culture, athletics or farming. These must be wiling and able to support themselves and their dependents through self-employed income. If you must apply for this, you must show evidence of experience, net worth and/or artistic qualifications depending on the criteria under which you are applying. Yet, applicants destined to the province of Quebec will comply with Quebec Self-Employed Program.
Canadian Experience Class
This program is for Temporary foreign workers and international students who wish to become Canadian Permanent Residents. These are those who have obtained a Canadian education and/or Canadian work experience. As a matter of fact, these individuals have already settled into the Canadian society and have established important networks in their communities and their careers.
The requirements here are based on a pass or fail model. In fact, there are separate minimum requirements for the two types of applicants. These are International Graduates with Canadian Work Experience and Temporary Foreign Workers.
International Graduates with Canadian Work Experience
Applicants must have:
- Successfully completed a program of study. This must be of at least two academic years at a Canadian post-secondary educational institution;
- Obtained at least one year of skilled, professional or technical work experience. This also must be within 24 months of the application date; and
- Moderate or basic language skills, depending on the skill level of occupation.

Temporary Foreign Workers
Applicants must have:
- Obtained at least two years of skilled, professional or technical work experience. And this must be within 36 months of the application date; and
- Moderate or basic language skills, depending on the skill level of relevant occupation.
- Finally, applicant who has met the minimum requirements and is still in Canada on either a Post-Graduate Work Permit or a Temporary Work Permit may apply from within Canada. And if you are no longer in Canada the time of application, you must submit your application within one year of leaving job in Canada.
Asylum
This program is for refugees who face danger, persecution and violations of human rights in their country of nationality. Canada as a world leader and champion of human rights issues, recognizes a responsibility to grant asylum to refugees. So, it offers protection to thousands of such individuals each year. Refugees may be government-assisted or privately sponsored, or organizations in Canada.
There are two main components to this program:
Refugee and Humanitarian Resettlement Program:
This program is for those refugees currently outside Canada who seeks resettlement. CIC selects refugees seeking resettlement, on the condition first that such refugees may be safe to remain where they are currently located or return to own country of nationality or otherwise. At any rate selection are dependent United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees recommendations. However CIC still will require security and medical screening.
Asylum in Canada:
This program offers protection to individuals currently in Canada. This is especially for those who fear to return to their home country. It’s the duty of Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Board to assess these cases.
Temporary Foreign Worker Program
If you intend coming back to Canada, this program is for you. The procedure is that you apply for a temporary work permit through the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. As a general condition, this work permit requires that you present a valid job offer from a Canadian employer. However, there are exceptions.
However, spouses and common-law partners of individuals who hold a Canadian work permit may accompany the work permit holder to Canada.
