By Saturday, June 11, 2022, all COVID-19 entry restrictions in Germany will be provisionally suspended. Then, all entries will again be permitted for all travel purposes. That is tourism and visiting trips inclusive. However, persons residing in China will still require an important reason to enter Germany (due to reciprocity). However, this does not apply to German citizens residing in the People’s Republic of China. Therefore, entering Germany no longer requires proof of vaccination or proof of testing.
For areas of variant of concern, however at present no states are designated as virus variant areas, further entry restrictions would apply.
Entry regulations:
- The German government classifies countries differently. Those with widespread occurrence of SARS-CoV-2 virus variants of concern as so-called areas of variant of concern. You could find the areas of variant of concern on the website of the Robert Koch-Institute.
- And if you have stayed in an area of a variant of concern within ten days before entry to Germany you must observe special regulations. This is because a travel ban applies to these areas. And as such, transport companies may not transport any individuals from these countries to Germany unless exceptions apply. That is why you are required to register before entry. And so to provide a negative PCR-test result and quarantine for 14 days. Detailed requirements are specified below.
- And, if you are entering from other countries (no prior stay in an area of a variant of concern) no special requirements apply on entry. This is because neither registration nor a negative test result is necessary.

A travel ban is in place on nations with the widespread occurrence of SARS-CoV-2 virus variants of concern. These are referred to as areas of a variant of concern. Transport companies like air carriers and railway companies, may not transport individuals from such nations to Germany. Only a few, strictly defined exceptions to this travel ban is available, namely:
- German citizens and persons who are resident in Germany. - in the case of border traffic: individuals who have spent less than 24 hours in an area of a variant of concern. And are only entering Germany for a period of not more than 24 hours.

- Individuals over the age of 12 who have stayed in an area of variant of concern for ten days prior to entry to Germany, are obliged to carry proof of COVID‑19 status when entering Germany. They must present a negative PCR test result: which are a rapid antigen test or proof of recovery or vaccination. . As a rule, COVID‑19 test results must not be more than 48 hours old at entry. However, if entering Germany with an airline, PCR tests may be taken a maximum of 48 hours before the (scheduled) departure time.
- Travelers who are just only transferring at an airport in Germany are also required to show their COVID‑19 status. This applies to all non-Schengen transit from or to third countries outside the EU and to transit from or to Schengen states.
- These test results, whether proof of recovery or proof of vaccination must be shown to the carrier for examination prior to departure.
- However, cross-border rail travel or cross-border short-sea transport may present their relevant documentation during transit. Finally, these proofs may also be requested by the German border authorities upon entry.

Quarantine regulations for entries from areas of variant of concern:
A requirement to self-isolate is in place in Germany. This is in accordance with the Federal Ministry of Health’s Ordinance on Coronavirus Entry Regulations.
Under these regulations, individuals entering Germany following a stay in an area of a variant of concern in the last ten days must
- proceed directly to destination following entry and self-isolate for 14 days (quarantine).
- During this quarantine, the individuals may not leave the house or flat or receive guests.
Quarantine ends automatically if the relevant country is no longer classified as an area of variant of concern.
Exemptions from the requirement to quarantine:
These exemptions apply to persons who:
- have only passed through an area of variant of concern without a stopover,
- are only passing via Germany and leaving the country through the fastest route available,
- in the case of border traffic from areas of the variant of concern – individuals who have spent less than 24 hours in a risk area or are only entering Germany for a period of up to 24 hours,
- are cross-border commuters and border crossers as specified on the website of the Federal Ministry of Health. This is with the proviso that the work they carry out is urgently required and critical to maintaining operational procedures.
